Home Teachers' Research Research Mentoring News & Events Reviews Links

Dear Liu Xia.

I am very interested and impressed by what I read. There is a stunning quality of care and insight as well as a sound grasp of action research approaches to improving practice. I wonder if you have deliberately omitted yourself from your focus? Might you like to rephrase your focus to 'develop students' and my own self confidence'? Perhaps you might consider explaining what you mean by 'love' and relating thoughts to the on-going debate on Je Kan's website?

A brief explanation about 'modern teaching methods' in China would help me to achieve even more appreciation of the significance of this piece of research. The way that you recount the influence of hearing 'Thank You' and how it has led you to change your approach to interaction is something truly cross-cultural and touches the heart of a 'humane' approach rather than a disciplinarion one. This relates well to a comment on page 3 about expressing one's real feelings. On page 3 I wonder if a reference to primary sources - for example Abraham Maslow's work (accessible on the web) would be useful to ground this writing in a critical account of relevant literature? Narrative accounts are well handled and expressive and I think they need some setting in a wider academic review.

Small point - look for the translation of 'delay' I suggest 'lengthen' (page 8)

Your interaction with Moira enables me to understand how you see her influence and you could usefully explain how Moira helped you to structure this AR report. I would like to know how other colleagues encourage you to improve your teaching - the accounts of the Dean Tian's influence and Moira are insightful, yet partial. Do the students' also enable you to improve your teaching and, if so, how is this?

Small point Page 10 Who can help me - needs a question mark at the end.

Where (throughout the account) you describe yourself and others, my curiosity sings out for a photograph! Is it possible for you to incorporate some photos? Well - I hope my comments are useful. Thank you so much, Moira and Liu, for enabling me to gain insights into your work and by doing so to improve my own.
